West Indies players in doubt for UAE stage due to busy CPL schedule

Talks are underway between BCCI and CWI officials to postpone CPL 2021 to allow West Indies players to play IPL in the UAE game.

The Cricket Control Council of India (BCCI) held a Special General Assembly (SGM) on May 29, during which the fate of the 14e edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been sealed with the UAE ready to host the remaining 31 games. Although officials have said they will have a word with overseas boards regarding their availability, nothing concrete has happened yet.

Already Australian and English players are in doubt for the rest of the league and now the news has come that the availability of West Indian players is also in doubt given the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will end just before the start of the IPL on September 19.

If this news is true, then franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Punjab Kings (PKBS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) will be hit hard as they have the best West Indies players on their squad. CPL will start on August 28 and end on September 19.

According to an article in Hindustan Times, the IPL KKR and PKBS teams also own Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Zouks respectively and they feel that postponing CPL until the 11th hour to host IPL will be difficult for Cricket West Indies (CWI).

BCCI is currently in discussions not only with CWI but also with other boards of directors to authorize foreign players for the remainder of the 31 matches of the UAE round. But it seems almost impossible for CWI to do anything now, as the West Indies are also expected to host Pakistan in July-August.

Participation of West Indies players uncertain for UAE stage of IPL due to busy schedule

Not only the Pakistan series, but the West Indies also host South Africa before and later Australia and they are expected to play 15 T20I matches. Players such as Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine-Trinbago Knight Riders and Faf du Plessis-St Lucia Zouks are important to their respective franchises in IPL. With so many at stake and strict quarantine standards for players, while landing in a particular country, the participation of Caribbean players is in doubt for the UAE game.
