Warm-up match: Umesh leads a good bowling display as India eliminates County XI for 220 despite Hameed’s ton | Cricket News

DURHAM: Young opener Haseeb Hameed celebrated his tryout recall with a hundred grains even as Umesh Yadav cast a few incisive spells and was largely responsible in India for Bowling County Select XI for 220 on day two of the match first-class warm-up.
Returning to the England squad after nearly five years, right-hander opener Hameed lived up to his reputation of being called “Baby Boycs” for his relentless defensive play as former great Geoffrey Boycott with a shot 112 out of 246 bullets.
His sleeves had 13 limits.
For India, Umesh was the top pitcher as he played for short periods and upped the pace a bit with 3/22 numbers in 15 overs.
Mohamed Siraj (2/32 in 13 overs) certainly made the best performance of the day, jostling his compatriot Washington Sundar (2), representative of the county.
Umesh may still not make it to the XI at Nottingham, but his performance will certainly be of interest to the team’s management.
Jasprit Bumrah (1/29 in 15 overs) didn’t give loose deliveries but saved the wicket from Rob Yates, where the left-hander went for a non-existent cut to a delivery rose, barely troubled Hameed, who defended him comfortably most of the time.
It was Umesh, who first rocked right-handed opener Jake Libby with a tilted delivery that saw two of the three stumps knocked down.
Siraj received a bad short ball that suddenly climbed over Washington and stole his gloves for an easy catch in the drawstring.
Umesh’s second casualty was rival captain Will Rhodes, who lost his stump when the quick pitcher bypassed the wicket and the delivery recovered from the pitch, beating the southpaw.
With County XI faltering at 56 for 4, Lyndon James (27) gave Hameed good support in their 75-point position for the fifth wicket. Hameed was expecting bad deliveries and was ready to mine and perform those singles and doubles.
Umesh’s third wicket was a short ball and James mis-timed a shot that was taken by Shardul.
Hameed was the best against Ravindra Jadeja (15-3-55-1), who was penalized with a few points. He approached the hundred with a shot aimed off Jadeja’s bowling alley.
A simple tap towards the short middle of the wicket of Shardul brought back his hundred of 228 balls. His innings ended with an advantage over KL Rahul over Shardul who had 1/31 in 14 overs.
Brief Notes: India 1st round 311. County XI 220 in 82.3 overs (Haseeb Hameed 112 on 246 balls, Umesh Yadav 3/27, Mohammed Siraj 2/32).
