Virat Kohli to quit captain if India loses second test, says Monty Panesar

Virat Kohli will feel the pressure after being unable to lead India to a win for a long time, former England spinner Monty Panesar said. Kohli has lost four consecutive tries as captain, while Ajinkya Rahane has been successful as captain during the same span, Panesar noted.

In an interaction with WION, Panesar said: “Virat Kohli is one of the greatest hitters of all time but the team is just not doing well under him and we have the result of the last four tests as the India played under him. I think Kohli will be under pressure and not anymore because Ajinkya Rahane has done amazingly well as captain.

“India have already lost four tests in a row and if the number increases to five in the next game, I think he will step down,” added Panesar.

Kohli’s fourth consecutive loss as captain came in the first test against England, which ended in a 227 point loss on Tuesday.

Speaking of the 1st Test, Panesar said: “It’s an incredible victory. The way England have played over the past five days shows how confident this team is. Joe Root is to be commended for the way he led his troops from the front lines. Everyone on this team has stepped up in one way or another and that’s what makes team sport great. The players must save this moment. It will be celebrated for a long time. “
