Australia have announced their 18-member squad for the upcoming T20I five-game series against New Zealand. While Aaron Finch will lead the squad, Andrew McDonald will become the squad coach in the absence of Justin Langer, who will be in South Africa for a three-game test series scheduled at the same time.
Matthew Wade, who was kicked out of the test team, will be Finch’s assistant. While Australia will be without some big names like Steve Smith and David Warner, there is no shortage of firepower in the squad as Finch, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis have been included in the squad.
Australia have also included three uncapped players in their squad, including teenager Tanveer Sangha. The 19-year-old skater will step up the spin attack which will be led by Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar. Other uncapped players are opener Josh Philippe and stimulator Riley Meredith.
Quick pitcher Jhye Richardson has also been named to the squad and hopes to play his first game for Australia in any format since March of last year. Stimulator Jason Behrendorff, who hasn’t played for Australia since the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, has also found a spot in the squad.
“In a World Cup year, it’s exciting to select a team that combines some of the biggest names in T20 international cricket with the country’s top emerging players,” Trevor Hohns, president of the selectors of Cricket Australia, said. “We like the balance of this team for what should be an exciting series against the Black Caps.
“The batting lineup will be enhanced by the inclusion of Matt Wade, who joins other seasoned internationals such as Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, D’Arcy Short and Ashton Turner. They will be complemented by wonderful young talents in the form of Josh Philippe and Ben McDermott, who have both been in great shape this BBL campaign.
“We are fortunate to be able to choose from some excellent all-rounders, which is reflected in the selections of Mitch Marsh, Daniel Sams and Ashton Agar, as well as Maxwell and Stoinis.
“Adam Zampa has become one of the top spinners in international white ball cricket and we have been very impressed with Tanveer Sangha, who has been brilliant all the way and with the Sydney Thunder this season.
“We’re also optimistic about our fast bowling stocks. Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith and Jason Behrendorff all impressed during the BBL and Kane Richardson and Andrew Tye are internationally recognized performers ”. he added.
