Tokyo Olympics: Sweden stuns USA in women’s football opener

The United States were on a 44-game unbeaten streak

Sweden’s women’s football team surprised the world champions USA 3-0 at Tokyo Stadium in their opener at the Olympic Games.

Forward Stina Blackstenius scored on either side of the break, before substitute Lina Hurtig took the lead in Sweden’s third goal with 20 minutes remaining.

The United States was undefeated in 44 games leading up to the Olympics.

They were eliminated by silver-winning Sweden on penalties in the quarterfinals five years ago.

Sweden were without Chelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson, while the United States started with key players Rose Lavelle, Sam Mewis, Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath and Lindsey Horan.

Elsewhere, veteran striker Marta has scored twice as much Brazil beaten China 5-0.

GB team went down in a winning start thanks to a brace from Ellen White as they beat comfortably Chile 2-0 in their first Group E match.

Later Wednesday, the hosts Japan to play Canada (11:30 am BST), Zambia take the Netherlands (12h00 BST) and Australia face New Zealand (12:30 p.m. BST).
