Tamil Nadu includes Natarajan in the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad | Cricket News

CHENNAI: India’s new rhythm sensation T Natarajan was named to the Tamil Nadu squad on Wednesday for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day tournament.
The experienced Dinesh Karthik, who led the state to a memorable triumph in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament, has been named captain of the 20-member squad.
Natarajan, who became the first Indian cricketer to make his international debut in all three formats on the same tour of Australia, is not part of the Indian squad for the first two tests against England in Chennai.
He was part of the XI that took the Brisbane test series victory against Australia after making his ODI and T20 debut on the tour.
Versatile player Baba Aparajith has been named the team’s vice-captain, according to a TNCA press release.
Tamil Nadu chief selector S Vasudevan said Natarajan was chosen to the squad, but they were waiting for a nod from BCCI to play the tournament.
“Yes, we have selected Natarajan but BCCI have to give him the green light to play in the tournament because they want to keep him fresh for ODI and T20 against England,” he told PTI.
Middle runner K Vignesh, who missed the Mushtaq Ali trophy after being diagnosed with COVID-19, is also making his return to the team.
Vasudevan said they were a balanced team with a mix of experience and youth, adding that he expected them to do well in the tournament.
He congratulated the team led by Dinesh Karthik for winning the Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Tamil Nadu will be deprived of the services of the versatile Vijay Shankar, Sandeep Warrier and Jagannath Sinivas, who were part of the SMAT team.
Shankar was injured in the first game and missed the rest of the team’s winning campaign, while Warrier joined the Indian team in Chennai as a bowler at the net for the first two tests.
Vasudevan said it was good to have Vignesh back in the squad as he did well last season but added that they could not consider Shankar for selection as he had not fully recovered.
“It’s good that Vignesh is back. He did very well last season. Vijay Shankar has not fully recovered and therefore has not been included,” he said.
BCCI has not yet announced the dates of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
