Former South African sailor Shaun Pollock praised Devdutt Padikkal after the left-hander’s brilliant IPL ton against the Rajasthan Royals.
Padilkkal, who had struggled on the slow tracks of Chennai, won in batting friendly conditions in Mumbai as he put an absolute clinic against an ill-fated attack by the Rajasthan Royals.
It was a lavish highest order batting display from Devdutt Padikkal as he took off an unbeaten 52-ball vortex 101.
Padikkal had a sensational 2020 IPL, but his strike rate of 121 drew criticism from his detractors. Pollock, who was hugely impressed with the southpaw last season, believes the opener worked on his weakness to chew up a lot of deliveries.
“I have always loved him from the moment I saw him in the United Arab Emirates. I thought he was classy, he is tall, he has everything you need, he looks stylish. And he has fantastic technique. I think in the UAE what I felt about him was that he was racking up too many point balls. I think he worked on it. He has domestic cricket races, ”Pollock said in a Cricbuzz video.
Shaun Pollock further added that he was left amazed at the punching power Devdutt Padikkal unleashed during the power play.
The champion felt that Devdutt Padikkal, thanks to his compelling power-play hitter, had closed the door to the Rajasthan Royals.
“When he got to Wankhede Stadium we said the surface would probably be fine for him, but I saw more power than I expected. He hit some fantastic shots in the first six overs. He was ready to attack (the opposition) and put them under pressure. Whatever odds they had, they were put to bed after the first six overs. He was dismissive of what they threw at him and continued to grow. He probably got a little stronger too, ”Pollock said.
