CHENNAI: Joe Root tied Michael Vaughan’s record for most test wins as England captain. England’s 227-point win over India on Tuesday was Root’s 26th victory as captain and he reached number in 47 appearances, four short of Vaughan’s 51.
Root, who took over as captain from Alastair Cook in 2017, is fifth on England’s ‘most appearances as captain’ list. Cook leads the list with 59, followed by Michael Atherton with 54 games. Vaughan is third with 51 games and Andrew Strauss is fourth over Root in 50.

England also won all the tests against India in which Root scored a century. He scored 218 in the first test, which was his fifth century against India. His first cent against India was the third in his Root career which came to Trent Bridge, Nottingham in July 2014. The double century in Chennai was also Root’s first double ton against India.

England took a 1-0 lead against India on Tuesday in the four-game test series at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Chasing a 420-point goal, India was eliminated by 192 points, with Root being declared Player of the Match for his double cent in the opening sets.
