Vivo IPL 2021: Robin Uthappa expresses his desire to open the sleeves for CSK in IPL 2021.
Vivo IPL 2021: Indian veteran drummer Robin Uthappa, who will play for the Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, has expressed his desire to open the sleeves. The 35-year-old cricketer is acquired by Chennai Super Kings through trade with Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2021 IPL auction.
Robin Uthappa for the past two years has played his role in the middle order for Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. However, its rating chart has gone down over the past two years and has failed to live up to its reputation. In 2019, he scored 282 points in 12 games with just half a century. The last outing was even worse as he failed to break through the 200-point mark, ending in 196 in 12 games for the Rajasthan Royals.
Uthappa believes he can once again rebuild his reputation in the silver-rich league if he is allowed to open the innings for the Chennai Super Kings. Times of India contacted the cricketer and had a conversation where he revealed that he could have been much better over the past two IPL seasons had he been given the freedom to open the sleeves.
“I would really like to play as an opener. This is where I flourish naturally. Getting the team off to a good start and winning games for the team is what I’m most comfortable doing. Over the past few years people have tried to use me in positions that I’m not necessarily good at. This is probably the reason why you have seen a drop in performance. But every time I opened the stick I did really well, ”Uthappa said.
Robin Uthappa is on average over 30 years old when he plays at number 3. At this location he has enjoyed tremendous success in the past. Uthappa scored 1,425 points playing at number 3, but is averaging 27.43 when cleared to open the innings with 2057 points under his belt in that position. But his average falls to only 27.45 and 17.44 respectively in 4th and 5th position.
The veteran cricketer will share a changing room with CSK skipper MS Dhoni. The two cricketers shared a dressing room in 2006 for the first time. Uthappa played a pivotal role in India’s success in the T20 World Cup.
“I have the best memories with Dhoni. We first met during a campaign for the Challenger Trophy and played an NCA (National Cricket Academy) match together around 2004. We were very close when we were playing together for India. Since then, we have always been in contact. Our families are also very close to each other. Our relationship has grown over the years. Even our kids are friends today, ”Uthappa said.
