Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took to Twitter and posted a video saying it was his absolute privilege to play for the Surrey squad ahead of the English County Championship game against Somerset starting on Sunday at the Oval .
Ashwin is part of the Indian squad currently in the UK and shortened his leisure break after playing in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand, in order to train for the match under his belt and will be seen playing for Surrey in their Group 2 game of the current County Championship.
I am so privileged to have the Surrey badge on: Ravichandran Ashwin
Surrey has confirmed Ravichandran Ashwin will play for the county against Somerset on his official website after nominating him to the squad for the crucial game. The competition will provide Ashwin with valuable match practice ahead of the five-test round against India starting August 4. The Oval will host the fourth match of the India-England series.
“Indian versatile Ravi Ashwin will join the squad for this game only. Sean Abbott was originally slated to be Surrey’s second foreign player in that game, alongside Hashim Amla, but a hamstring injury sustained in the LV = County Championship encounter with Gloucestershire ended his stay at the Kia Oval earlier ”, Surrey posted on its website.
“Ashwin had remained in the country after the World Trials final in India last month. He will meet the India test team after this match ahead of their test series with England, which is not due to start until August 4. The fourth game of this series will be played at the Kia Oval from September 2 to 6, in even more than seven weeks ”, the statement read.
Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin, in a video posted to Surrey Cricket’s Twitter account, said“I am so privileged to have the badge. I heard and wondered what the counties of London are. Even if it’s only for one game, I’m happy to share this dressing room.
