Rajasthan Royals set to release captain Steve Smith before 2021

IPL 2021: The Royals of Rajasthan are expected to release their captain Steve Smith before the IPL 2021.

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021: The Rajasthan Royals are most likely to release Steve Smith ahead of the 2021 IPL. The Rajasthan-based franchise will participate in the final appeal shortly before submitting the final roster of released players. BCCI has asked all franchises to provide the final list of released players by January 20.

One of the main reasons for this call is Smith’s poor average form in the previous IPL. Rajasthan Royals has not done well in the past under Smith’s leadership. Smith’s impact as a leader and batsman has not been beneficial to the team so far. The Australian batsman has amassed 311 runs in 14 outings with a strike rate of 131 that spans three half centuries.

Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League and since then the search for another is still ongoing. The previous season, the franchise finished last at the end of the league stages.

Strong name of Sanju Samson to become captain of the Royals of Rajasthan:

It is also understood that the Royals are in desperate need of a strong Indian core that they miss. The side is packed with the top rated overseas stars making their core. Steve Smith, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler are the prominent foreign names on the list.

If Steve Smith breaks free from the franchise, the Royals will need a new captain. Indian doorman Sanju Samson is the notable name. Samson was recently captain of Kerala in the current Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Sanju Samson was also the top racing scorer for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League. He was also selected for the Australian white ball game for his dominating performance in the IPL.

According to the sources, management is showing no interest in making the Englishmen Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes the side skipper due to their unavailability. We see that the English couple arrived late in the previous season and sometimes soon leave the IPL.
