The Royals of Rajasthan were the first champions of the Indian Premier League. Unfortunately, the Royals were unable to win their second title despite performing well in some seasons. Last year, the Jaipur-based franchise finished at the bottom position of the points table for the first time in IPL the story.

The management of the Rajasthan squad were understandably unhappy after the team’s disappointing performance at the IPL 2020. Although the Royals had their star players available, they were unable to advance to the playoffs. Steve Smith lost his contract, while several Indian pacers returned to the auction.

The Royals entered the auction with a massive market value of 37.85 crore. They splurged 16.25 crore to acquire Chris Morris. Apart from that, the team also added Mustafizur Rahman and Liam Livingstone to their overseas department.

IPL 2021: SWOT Analysis of the Royals of Rajasthan (RR)

Strengths – Multiple match winners in the batting unit

The Royals of Rajasthan have assembled an explosive batting lineup that can blow up the best bowling lineups in the world. Sanju Samson and Manan Vohra have enormous IPL experience under their belt. Yashasvi Jaiswal won matches for the Indian U-19 team early in his career.

Ben stokes and Jos Buttler have already single-handedly won matches for the Rajasthan Royals. Chris Morris can turn the game around with a few big hits in the slog overs. Last year Jofra Archer and Rahul Tewatia showed how they can win games for the Royals.

Riyan Parag has the experience of two IPL seasons. The versatile young Indian is expected to perform better than IPL 2020 this year. Liam Livingstone is a T20 specialist and Shivam Dube has played some revolutionary shots on the national circuit. Finally, even David Miller can play the role of finisher to perfection for the Royals of Rajasthan. So having multiple game winners in the batting unit will be of great benefit to the Royals.

Weaknesses – Lack of support for Jofra Archer in the rhythm-bowling attack

Jofra Archer was the IPL 2020’s most valuable player. Yet the Rajasthan Royals finished last in the standings. The reason behind this was that the Royals’ Indian pacers could not live up to expectations. The Jaipur-based franchise has shown immense confidence in Jaydev Unadkat. However, the left arm stimulator has yet to work consistently for the Royals.

Speaking of other options with the Rajasthan Royals, Chris Morris is an injury-prone player. He could choose injuries that could limit his appearances for the franchise. Team management have also made it clear that Ben Stokes will not be playing much in the 2021 IPL.

Recently, Mustafizur Rahman said he would play for Bangladesh in the Test Series against Sri Lanka if the selectors name him to the squad. So it will be interesting to see if Rahman shows up for the Royals in IPL 2021. Kartik Tyagi and Akash Singh are still learning, while Andrew Tye has lost his golden touch. Chetan Sakariya could be a great option, but he will play his debut season in 2021. Thus, the lack of proper support for Jofra Archer remains a weakness of RR even in IPL 2021.

Opportunities – It’s time for Shivam Dube to show his talent

The Rajasthan Royals have added versatile Shivam Dube to their squad ahead of the 2021 IPL. Dube has previously played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Although the Bangalore-based franchise gave him plenty of chances to come out on top as the match winner, Dube was unable to cement his place in the squad.

As a result, the Royal Challengers released him after IPL 2020. This year most matches are likely to be in Mumbai. Shivam Dube has played plenty of matches on the sites reported for IPL 2021. So the coming season is a golden chance for Dube to silence his critics.

The Rajasthan Royals will most likely include him in their game eleven for the opening matches. Shivam Dube’s performance in the first few matches will determine his place on the match squad. Since RR also needs support options for Jofra Archer, Dube may even get more opportunities with the ball in IPL 2021.

Threats – Excessive reliance on foreign players and inexperienced captain

There are two major threats to the Rajasthan Royals’ chances of securing their second IPL title in 2021. The first threat is their overdependence on overseas cricketers. Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia are the only two Indian players to have been part of the Indian team T20I in the last matches.

There are many uncapped Indian players in the Royals squad. On the other hand, foreign players are very experienced and have been part of the IPL for quite some time. Thus, the Jaipur-based franchise will tend to rely more on its four outsiders in the game XI.

Sanju Samson will captain the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021. This is the first time Samson will lead an IPL team in his career. While Sanju has captained Kerala in the national circuit, skipping an IPL franchise will be a whole different challenge. Last year, fans saw how the Punjab Kings failed in the first half of IPL 2020 after appointing KL Rahul as their new captain. While the trick to appointing a new leader can do wonders for RR, there is always a threat of inexperience.
