Chris Morris was bought for a staggering sum of INR 16.25 crore by the Rajasthan Royals outfit during the IPL 2021 auction.
The IPL auctions took place on February 18, 2021 in Chennai and the franchises didn’t hesitate to spend huge sums of money to get the players they needed. And, the biggest beneficiary at the end of the auction was South African cricketer Chris Morris.
The all-rounder was pocketed by the Rajasthan side for a record sum of INR 16.25 crore. That would literally mean Morris would receive an astronomical sum of over INR 1 crore per IPL match this year.
And now the Royals of Rajasthan have revealed the reason they spent a gargantuan sum to procure Morris’s services. Jake Lush McCrum, the COO of the Rajasthan Royals revealed that Morris was still on their radar, and the franchise knew there would be stiff competition to choose Morris. McCrum also said he was grateful that the Kings of Punjab side stopped bidding for Morris, because if they had continued, then the Rajasthan group could have pulled out.
“Chris Morris is someone we’ve always had on our radar and we knew there would be a lot of competition from other teams for him. Fortunately, the Punjab Kings stopped bidding when they did, otherwise we would have lost it, ”McCrum said in a conversation with The Times of India.
“Chris Morris brings the specific set of skills we were looking for,” says McCrum
McCrum further added that Morris brings to the table a specific set of skills that the franchise is looking for. The COO revealed that Morris is a seasoned activist and will strengthen the bowling arsenal on the Rajasthan side, which already has Jofra Archer and Kartik Tyagi in their ranks. McCrum concluded by stating that Morris could also win a game for his team with the willow in hand.
“Chris brings a very specific skill set that we were looking for. He is extremely experienced and will add to our bowling depth, especially at death alongside Jofra Archer and Kartik Tyagi. In order with the bat, he can also win you games thanks to his powerful strike, ”concluded McCrum.
Needless to say, Morris would lobby to justify the huge price tag next to his name in the 14th edition of the IPL.
