MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had an unforgettable 2020 IPL. However, for Dhoni, one of the most accomplished leaders in cricket history, there were a few bright spots to take away from Season 13. One of them was the rise. of Ruturaj Gaikwad, 23, who has been impressive in the last three games with scores of 65 not out (against RCB), 72 (against KKR) and 62 not out (against KXIP).
Gaikwad’s efforts helped CSK record wins in all three games. But it was not an easy navigation for the youngster in the tournament as he started with a duck. Overwhelmed by the pressure of failure, he was a little nervous.
But Dhoni’s ability to support young people and make the most of them is probably what worked for Gaikwad.
Gaikwad, in a recent interview, revealed how a conversation with Dhoni had inspired him after being fired for a duck in his first match.
“I knew the challenges in the MI match, and I was prepared to face players like Boult, [Jasprit] Bumrah and [James] Pattinson. But I think my dismissal kind of set the tone and we could never get over it, being knocked out for 110 odds [114 for 9]”Ruturaj Gaikwad told Sportstar.
“I blamed myself for coming out of the new ball and not being able to give the team the start. This was reflected on the ground. I never let a ball slip through my legs or drop a regulation grip, but it did happen on the court. It reflected on the pitch that my confidence was low.
“Dhoni approached me and asked if I was under pressure. He said, “We don’t want to put pressure on you, but we have expectations from you. All I want to tell you is that you are going to play the next three games without a doubt whether you score a point or not. Try to enjoy these games and don’t think about performance. “
“He told me not to worry about the ups and downs and to enjoy the performance. After this discussion, my thought process changed. Until then, I was desperately thinking about things like when will I have my first limit in the IPL or when will I have my first impact, even with a 15-20 point cameo.
“But after that conversation it was a drastic change. I remember that during this RCB game, I was only thinking of contributing to the cause of the team in this situation. I think the captain sensed my state of mind, changed my thought process and freed me, ”Gaikwad concluded.
