Playing for Surrey, R Ashwin returns unimpressive 1/99 numbers | Cricket News

LONDON: India’s first spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was able to win just one wicket of the 43 overs he played on Day 2 of the County Championship game between Surrey and Somerset on Monday.
Ashwin, who is one of three Indian spinners to win 400 test wickets, gave up 99 points as Somerset scored a mammoth 429 overall in 148.5 overs.
Ashwin’s only victim was Tom Lammonby (42), who was toppled by the India veteran.
Skipper James Hildreth (107) was the best score for Somerset.
In response, Surrey had 24 for no loss to stumps on day two of the four-day tie, behind Somerset by 405 points.
Ashwin will be critical to India’s success in the five-game Test Series against hosts England from August 4.
The Indian cricketers, who are on a three-week hiatus, will meet on July 15 in Durham for a camp ahead of the series against England.
