Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra is concerned about Manish Pandey’s future with the Indian national team after the right-hander was excluded from the T20I squad for the upcoming five-game series against England in Ahmedabad.
Manish Pandey has been among the fringe players on the limited-overs squad for a few years and comes into the eleven when a top-notch player is rested or injured. He knocked in 6 T20I innings last year going undefeated in 5 of them.
He was selected in the eleven over Shreyas Iyer in the first T20I in Australia but then missed the next two games with an elbow injury. With the return of Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant and the addition of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tewatia to the short-form squad, Pandey and Sanju Samson are absent.
Samson played the 3 T20Is in Australia; as he struck eagerly – a strike rate of 141.18 – but had no major scores to show. Pandey and Samson will look to produce outstanding performances in the 2021 IPL to make a national team comeback.
Aakash Chopra, in his YouTube video, has expressed concerns about Pandey and Samson’s future with the national team as other players he is excited for now have a chance to cement their place in the series. English.
“Manish Pandey’s name is usually present (in limited Indian teams). It raises a question mark about his (international) career because he doesn’t have a lot of chances in the XI anyway and now you’re looking at Pant and other options again ”. Aakash Chopra said.
“Two big names that are missing are Sanju Samson and Manish Pandey. Samson had his chance with the bat, but it didn’t go well for him. And that’s the problem with the T20. It is very difficult to do well in this format. So Samson paid the price. He showed a glimpse of what he could do but he couldn’t continue.
“I am absolutely delighted that Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tweatia have been selected and that they are now in the T20 scheme,” Aakash Chopra added.
Aakash Chopra backs decision to rest Bumrah and Shami for T20Is
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed shami are rested from the T20I series against the side of Eoin Morgan. Aakash Chopra explains that while Shami recovers from the injury he suffered in Australia, Bumrah has played a lot of cricket and that there is a lot more to come – with the series of tests underway, the IPL, the England tour and the T20 World Cup – and therefore, the selectors are pragmatic about the physical and mental health of the bowlers.
“India has handled the workload well. Bumrah must play the IPL and then the World Cup. So it’s a long and long season ahead. There is also a series of five tests in England, so you really have to deal with the workload. Shami started playing again but he rested probably because the T20s are back to back. The turnaround time for 5 T20 is much less. “ added the former opener.
