KOLKATA: Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman was selected as Bengal’s batting consultant, while Laxmi Ratan Shukla was appointed under-23 coach, marking his return to cricket six years after entering politics.
It will be somewhat of a second round for former Bengal skipper and allrounder Shukla, who retired from all forms of cricket to join the Trinamool Congress in 2016.
Shukla had become deputy of Howrah (North) and later he was Minister of Sports under Aroop Biswas.
Shukla was later appointed president of TMC’s Howrah district, but just before the last assembly polls he resigned his post and left politics to “focus more on cricket”.
“Let’s work together. Looking forward to it,” the 40-year-old said of his return to cricket.
Making a series of announcements in preparation for the season, the Bengal Cricket Association (CAB) also retained veteran Arun Lal as head coach, while promoting Sourasish Lahiri as assistant coach for the senior team.
Former Bengal speedster Shib Shankar Paul has been appointed bowling coach for all Bengal teams.
“On behalf of the Association, I wish the best of the former cricketers who have been given new responsibilities and I have no doubt that they will be able to use their rich experience to help Bengal Cricket win laurels in of the next national season, ”said the chairman of the CAB. Avishek Dalmiya said in a statement.
In women’s cricket, Rituparna Roy would be the head coach while Charanjit Singh would be the assistant coach of the Bengal senior team.
“We have made new appointments with their merit and talents in mind. We want Bengal cricket to shine and we have made the changes we have deemed appropriate to that end,” said the CAB secretary. , Snehashis Ganguly.
