“As the IPL grew, the harbor master’s office became a year round task, and as such, local Indian leadership became increasingly important. Sanju made his debut as a Royal and it has been a joy to see his development over the past eight years. He is the perfect fit to lead the Royals into the 2021 season, ”said Royals principal owner Manoj Badale.

“His contribution (of Smith) on the field and his contribution off the field, especially in the development of some of our young players, both as captain and mentor, has been immense.

The Royals – who won the only title in 2008 – released eight players, while keeping a core of 17 members, and Badale was happy with the roster.

“We have a talented squad that underperformed last season and we will want to correct that. They are a well balanced team and we are excited for the coming season, ”said the main owner.

In an important addition, the Royals followed in Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara as director of cricket.
