Average test since January 2020:

Ravichandran Ashwin (347 counters) needs three additional counters to complete 350 international home counters. He will be the third Indian to achieve the feat behind Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

Stuart Broad (517) needs three more wickets to top Courtney Walsh’s (519) tally and become the third most successful test player.

Root will become the most successful English skipper in test cricket with another test victory (27 wins). England are one win away from matching Australia’s record of seven consecutive victories by a visiting team in Asia.

Match preview

Virat Kohli’s invincible side is found in a rare spot of his lair. With Joe Root’s men inflicting a massive blow to the body in the first test with a 227 point win, India was forced to retreat to the living room and rewire the slits in their armor.

Despite the extravagant hitting lineup at its disposal, India has been under the pump as England’s plans hit the nail on the head right from the Toss.

With the fans back and a pitch finally set up to suit her style, India may have gained some momentum ahead of Saturday’s first session. Add to that, England’s decision to rest veteran Jimmy Anderson and the in-form Dom Bess while Jofra Archer is judged injured and Jos Buttler returned home.

India vs England 2nd test: Kohli & Co. eyes redemption after sobering loss

England added Stuart Broad, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Ben Foakes and Ollie Stone to their 12-man squad ahead of the test. Despite the return of all-rounder Moeen Ali to the test squad after two years, India are said to be wary of the threat the 33-year-old could present.

LOOK: CD Gopinath, the only surviving member of India’s first-ever Test victory of 1952 over England in Chennai, relives that historic moment.

On his last tour of India in 2016, Ali shone on a sad tour for the visitor. In five tests, Ali has won 10 wickets while being England’s second best bet with the bat with 381 points including two hundred to his name.

India’s first drummers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane had a tough time as the Mumbaikars failed to set the tone with the bat. With a slightly exhausted English attack taking guard, Rohit and Rahane reportedly intend to set the record straight and lead the Indian to bat again.

How Rishabh Pant’s mom put him on the fast track to Team India

As India prepares to take the visitor to a spinning track from day one, Kohli will be tempted to settle in with three spinners. Axar Patel, the left-arm spinner, will likely make his Test debut replacing Shahbaz Nadeem with his lower-order stick offering an advantage. It could also mean the return of Kuldeep Yadav in white who could replace Washington Sundar. Sundar, despite his excellent performance with the bat, made the Indian spin attack one-dimensional in the first test with Officer Ravichandran Ashwin in the lead.

As we prepare for the first session, all eyes will be on the crucial draw and possible rosters that could stack up to play another crucial test match in the context of the Test World Championships.

What they said

“I’m sure that will change from day 1. We’ll have to wait and see how it goes in the first session and continue from there. We have to forget what happened in the first test and focus on good cricket. We know these conditions very well. Don’t think it will be complicated as such. The sooner we adjust to the wicket, the better, ” Ajinkya Rahane on the nature of the Chepauk terrain

“In the opening rounds of the first Test, Bessy (Dom Bess) produced a brilliant delivery to get rid of him. We have to keep delivering our best balls time and time again and try to put pressure on him. We know he is one of the best players in the world and desperate to prove a point this week, ” Joe root trying to keep Indian Captain Virat Kohli under pressure.
