The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday the 2021 T20 Men’s World Cup groups that will be hosted by BCCI in Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from October 17 to November 14. Big rivals India and Pakistan have been placed in Group 2 of the Super 12. This will see the two teams face off in the group stages of the flagship event.
The groups, selected on the basis of the team rankings as of March 20, 2021, see the reigning champions of the West Indies grouped together with the former champions of England, Australia and South Africa in Group 1 of the Super 12, with two qualifiers from the first round joining them. .
Group 2 will include former champions India and Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan and the other two qualifiers from the first round.
Eight teams will compete in the first round, including the automatic qualifiers of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, with the remaining six having reserved their places through the men’s qualifying for the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup.
Ireland, the Netherlands and Namibia join Sri Lanka in Group A, while Oman, PNG and Scotland will face Bangladesh in Group B.
“We are delighted to announce the groups for the 2021 ICC T20 Men’s World Cup. There are some great matches offered by the groups and it is starting to bring the event to life for our fans as the premier multi-team event. since the onset of the global pandemic is approaching, ”ICC Acting Managing Director Geoff Allardice said in a statement.
“Given the disruption caused by COVID-19, we have chosen the deadline as close to the event as possible to ensure we can include as much cricket as possible in the rankings that determine the groups. There is no doubt that we will see some very competitive cricket when the event starts in just three months, ”he added.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said: “With the announcement of the reunions, our countdown to the ICC T20 World Cup begins. There is nothing separating the two groups as both are filled with very competitive teams in the shortest format in the game. That said, the exciting T20 format is known for its surprises, and we need to be prepared for it. I am sure we will see some exciting and biting games.
