Update: Sanju Samson has sprained a ligament in his knee and was therefore not available for selection for this match. The medical team is monitoring their progress at this time.

TOSS: Sri Lanka wins Toss and chooses to strike first

Shanaka: We’re going to strike first. History suggests that the hitter first is ideal here. We have a beginner, that is Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

Dhawan: We were also looking to strike first as the dew factor would come into play. Shaw will open with me. Kishan and Suryakumar will debut. Kuldeep and Chahal will be our spinners.

Few of the boys from Dhawan entering the field today.

2:30 p.m. IST: It’s TOSS time!

UPDATE: Suryakumar Yadav and birthday boy Ishan Kishan receive their first ODI caps.

2:15 p.m. REAL: The combination of the Indian team for the opening of the ODI would be interesting for several roles. Shaw is expected to be set to open with Dhawan while Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal head the spin department. India also has incisive leg spinner Rahul Chahar and mysterious spinner Varun Chakaravarthy in addition to spin-bowling allrounders Krunal Pandya and K Gowtham in the fray. Also, another interesting selection worth noting will be between birthday boy Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson for babysitting duties.

2:10 p.m. REAL: Live visuals show the Indian team playing soccer. Fairly hot and humid conditions also persist over Colombo.

2:05 p.m. REAL: Warm-up for an exciting session on the sidelines

1:50 p.m. REAL: Okay, as we prepare for the biggest draw. Here is an overview of the key figures and statistics.

  • Shikhar Dhawan will become the the oldest indian in his debut as a captain at 35 years and 225 days. His 142 ODI tally will be behind only Anil Kumble (217) and Rohit Sharma (171) for playing most matches before captaining India for the first time in ODI.
  • Dhawan needs 23 races to complete 6000 ODI runs as opener and become the fastest Indian t to reach the mark.
  • Dhawan needs 17 races to complete 1000 ODI executions against Sri Lanka.
  • Sri Lanka has not won an ODI bilateral series against India since 1997. Its last series victory came in a 2-1 Home Test series victory in 2008.
  • India will play its first ODI without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in three years. The last time India played without them was against Afghanistan in the 2018 Asian Cup. India was led by MS Dhoni in a tied contest.
  • Dasun Shanaka will become the 10th ODI Captain for Sri Lanka since 2017 – the highest number for any team in the same period.
  • Sanju Samson made his T20I debut in 2015. The expectation of the goalkeeper-batter five years and 364 days is the longest among Indians to make his ODI debut after playing his first T20I match.

The T20 World Cup is fast approaching with India and Sri Lanka in preparation mode in contrasting styles.

As an overload of prodigious young talent spreads over the Indian camp which has all of its heavyweights away in England, an injured Sri Lanka will aim to establish a new base and rekindle new hopes under Dasun Shanaka – his 10th ODI captain in the last four years.

READ: India led by Shikhar Dhawan start as favorites against volatile Sri Lanka

A long-standing struggle with player contracts has seen senior players like Thisara Perera retire while Angelo Mathews is considering a similar route. Dinesh Chandimal is left aside to question his exclusion from the three formats and the recent trip to England has further shaken the Sri Lankan camp.

Three players have been sent home for flouting COVID-19 protocols and skipper Kusal Perera has been replaced by Shanaka for the home series against a virgin Indian team.

As all uncertainties and turmoil hangs over Sri Lanka, India will aim to make the most of their limited six games – their last streak before the T20 World Cup. Well, sure, the IPL is going to be in September, but this series will play out well as a decisive series for fringe players who might seek out the T20WC squad in case India chooses to travel with a larger squad.

Everything to play and the road to the T20 World Cup starts here!

IND Captain Shikhar Dhawan: “Every series from now on will be played with the T20 World Cup in mind. So, of course, whether the selectors or Ravi bhai or Virat feels like trying some players, we will do it with mutual understanding because this series presents a good platform to experiment. “

Dasun Shanaka, captain of SL: “The two teams will start tied because even they have new players to come. We all know they (Indian cricketers) have played IPL, but still (few) have played international cricket. Both teams have equal chances.
