IPL 2021: BCCI is considering an additional franchise for the next IPL. 2021

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021: The 13th edition of the cash rich league saw its closure a few months ago. However, preparations for the 14th edition had started since the IPL 2020 saw its title winner.

The T20 format league has seen tremendous growth in value and success year on year after its inception in 2018. Usually IPL is scheduled with eight franchises, but after IPL’s delayed 2020 season, the BCCI wanted to add a few more. in the existing pool of 8 franchises.

The tender for the new franchise will be given in March 2021 and the teams will be included in the 2022 edition of the IPL. The franchise expects a mega-auction before IPL 2022. However, according to recent reports, BCCI is considering adding at least one franchise in IPL 2021.

The expansion of the most luxurious T20 League officially received a green signal at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting held on December 24. During the meeting, a few key points were discussed, as reported by The Times of India.

Key points from the BCCI AGM:

  • One team for now and one later, keeping market conditions in mind because going immediately could limit the potential value of the franchise.
  • Adding a second team right after the first will impact the usual IPL window. The number of matches will increase, which in turn will impact the already scheduled international cricket.
  • Adding a second team will require changes to the league format. The current IPL window will be shorter to drive all games and therefore a new format will need to be introduced or the BCCI will need to increase the IPL window. The current IPL window is 2 months.

“Everyone in the industry said it was a well thought out decision by the BCCI. This will clearly benefit BCCI in the short term or even in the long term and it does not really disrupt the ecosystem ”. industry executives said.
