NEW DELHI: Anurag Thakur replaced Kiren Rijiju as the country’s sports minister on Wednesday with just over two weeks left for the Tokyo Olympics.
The 46-year-old former chairman of the Cricket Board was put in charge of sports with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting after being sworn in as minister.
Thakur was president of BCCI between May 2016 and February 2017. Prior to that he was secretary of the board and also headed the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA).
A member of the HP Hamirpur constituency, Thakur served as Minister of State for Finance and Trade under Nirmala Sitharaman before Wednesday’s cabinet reshuffle.
His brother Arun Dhumal is currently treasurer of the BCCI.
