3 teams that can target Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla may not have had a memorable IPL 2020 outing, but he remains a cash-rich league veteran. Chawla has only managed six wickets in seven games with an average of 31.83 with a very high save rate of 9.09.

Chawla was one of six cricketers who were released from the franchise run by MS Dhoni and he will be back on the IPL auction table again on February 18th.

On that note, here’s a look at three teams that could pick Piyush Chawla in the 2021 IPL auction:

The defending champions are boasting of a compelling squad ahead of the 2021 IPL auction, but they could still look to add more power to it, especially in the spin-bowling department.

Mumbai Indians have the likes of Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav and rookie Anukul Roy in their spin-bowling reserves alongside left-arm Orthodox at Krunal Pandya.

They could look to strengthen it further by enlisting the services of veteran leggy Piyush Chawla. Chawla may not have had a memorable 2020 IPL, but he remains one of the greatest spinners to ever feature in the history of the cash-rich league.

Kings XI Punjab has a total of nine locations to complete the 2021 IPL auction and to do so, they have the highest purse (Rs 53.2 Crore) among all franchises.

KXIP has players like Murugan Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi on their squad as top spinners, but they could still look to strengthen the department by adding Piyush Chawla’s experience.

Chawla represented KXIP during the early years of IPL, but he’s a much better bowler than he was then. His experience can be useful for Murugan Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi.

Another department outside of seam-bowling where Rajasthan Royals struggled last season was in spin-bowling.

While Rahul Tewatia was effective in controlling the flow of races, he only took 10 wickets in 14 outings at 32.06.

However, it was Shreyas Gopal who turned out to be a big disappointment. The skater could neither take wickets (10 in 14 games at 42.7) nor stem the flow of points.

The Royals have a total of 8 slots to fill, three of which are overseas cricketers. They have up to Rs 34.85 crore to fork out. Hence, they can easily opt for the services of Piyush Chawla as the backup option for Gopal.
