The 14th IPL season is less than two months away, but before that, a 2021 IPL mini auction will take place where each of the eight franchises will seek to fill the gaps that exist in their squad.
Among a host of superstars likely to come under hammer, one of them is Afghan sensation Mujeeb Ur Rahman. The Afghan spinner didn’t get a single game in the 2020 edition and was subsequently released by the Kings XI Punjab ahead of the auction.
That said, Mujeeb still remains a force to be reckoned with, and one shouldn’t be surprised if a bidding war ensues between franchises for his services.
Here’s a look at 3 teams that could possibly choose Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 2021 IPL auction:
Royals of Rajasthan
Rajasthan Royals suffered from Shreyas Gopal’s poor form last season.
The Karnataka leg thrower has managed just 10 wickets in 14 games at an average of 42.7 and an economy rate of 8.54.
With three overseas slots released following the release of Steve Smith, Tom Curran and Oshane Thomas, the Royals can go for a wicket rotation option in the form of Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman.
Mujeeb remains one of the great T20 spinners of the modern age, who can play the power play as well as he can in the mid-overs. He is also a practical lower order drummer.
With Rs 34.85 crore in the bank, the Rajasthan Royals can surely take a kick out of the Afghan spinner at the upcoming IPL 2021 auction.
The Mumbai Indians have released Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Pattinson, Mitchell McClenaghan and while they are aiming to bolster their squad with a powerful third game bowling option, they may also be looking to add power to their stocks of spin-bowling.
While Rahul Chahar did well last season, Krunal Pandya failed to make an impact with the ball. And, while they will still persist with Krunal due to his batting credentials, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to rack up Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s services and keep him as a backup option with Jayant Yadav and Anukul Roy.
Mumbai Indians have four slots to fill overseas and they have a total of Rs 15.35 crore to shell out in the 2021 IPL auction.
Kings XI Punjab
Kings XI Punjab released Mujeeb Ur Rahman ahead of the 2021 IPL auction.
But don’t be surprised if they buy back at a lower price in the next IPL 2021 auction. Mujeeb racked up Rs 4 Crore last season. However, he didn’t play a single game as KXIP played Glenn Maxwell, Sheldon Cottrell, Chris Jordan, Chris Gayle and James Neesham ahead of him.
That said, Mujeeb still remains a force to be reckoned with, given his ability to play both on the power play and middle position.
