The 2021 IPL auction is just two weeks away and franchisees are busy determining and analyzing who they should choose in order to further strengthen their squad ahead of the 14th season.
One of the names that would definitely interest franchises – especially those who have struggled with their opening suit in the past – is West Indian swashbuckler Evin Lewis.
Lewis represented the Mumbai Indians in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, but he was unable to emulate his exploits from other leagues. He only managed 430 runs at an average of 26.88 and a strike rate of 131.1 over two seasons and was unsold in the last auction.
That said, Lewis remains one of the most formidable hitters for a cricket ball, and he could still find a few bidders in the next auction.
Here’s a look at 3 teams that could pick Evin Lewis in the 2021 IPL auction-
Kolkata knight horsemen
One of the issues that Kolkata Knight Riders faced during IPL 2020 was the lack of strong opening partnerships.
While Shubman Gill was a regular among the openers, the second slot was more or less a musical chair with Sunil Narine, Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana occupying the spot at various points in the tournament.
And, while they could still continue with the aforementioned options alongside Shubman Gill, it would serve them well if they went for a save option in the form of West Indian swashbuckler Evin Lewis.
KKR has 2 overseas slots to fill the IPL 2021 auction and has a remaining balance of Rs 10.75 Crores.
Royals of Rajasthan
After releasing Steve Smith, Tom Curran, Oshane Thomas, the Rajasthan Royals have three overseas slots to fill the IPL 2021 auction.
Much like KKR, the Rajasthan Royals have tried many combinations at the top of the order. With Ben Stokes likely to open the sleeves, the Jaipur-based franchise may call on Evin Lewis to further bolster their opening combination.
If Lewis and Stokes find their elements, their combination can prove to be devastating, which in turn will release significant pressure from the shoulders of Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler.
Chennai Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings have released up to six players from their 2020 IPL squad following a disastrous campaign that saw them withdraw from competition ahead of the playoffs for the very first time in their history.
CSK have an established opening pair in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis, but they can still call on the services of Evin Lewis as a replacement for the veteran South African batsman.
That said, CSK only has one niche to fill overseas so it will be interesting to see if they opt for the services of the swashbuckler Windies.
