2021 IPL Player Retention: Smith is out; Sanju Samson named new captain

Indian Premier League club Rajasthan Royals parted ways with Steve Smith on Wednesday and named Sanju Samson captain for the 2021 tournament.

The franchise, which finished at the bottom of the table in the last edition of the tournament, decided to give the name of the captaincy to Sanju – who has been one of the team’s old war horses. Although they released some of the Indian rookies – Ankit Rajpoot, Varun Aaron, Akash Singh – the team has shown confidence in seasoned activists Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Robin Uthappa.

The team will also be joined by Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara as director of cricket.

RR had a dismal outing in IPL 2020, having finished at the bottom of the table with 12 points. IPL 2021 is scheduled to take place between April and May and efforts are underway to host the tournament in India.
